Enhancing Academic Growth for Learners Everywhere
FAQ
WHY ARE WE OFFERING THESE SERVICES? We have seen first-hand how students benefit from quality instruction. Unfortunately, not all students are provided targeted quality instruction in a systematic fashion with adequate practice opportunities. We provide this opportunity to our students by tailoring instruction to meet individual student needs and we monitor and make adjustments to their assignments as needed to foster growth. Our EAGLE products have been developed over decades using best practice and technology combined with our extensive experience working with students having disabilities and those at risk. EAGLE is the vehicle by which we make high quality targeted instructional activities available to many students at a reasonable cost. WHO ARE WE? Dr. Christine Kovach has a doctorate in special education with a concentration in curriculum and instruction and holds Ohio licenses in deaf and hearing-impaired education, multiple disabilities, orthopedic disabilities and Pupil Services Administration. She has worked within several high-performing Ohio school districts for over 35 years. Her twin sister business partner, Maureen Kovach Newell, B.A., COTA/L is a therapist and graphic artist who has worked for 30 years in Ohio school districts providing Occupational Therapy to facilitate student skill development across all domains. HOW IS EAGLE DIFFERENT FROM IN-PERSON TUTORING? * Significantly less expensive with access to targeted high-quality instruction and materials designed for student success - a month of service/materials with ongoing progress monitoring is provided at a cost equal to a single hour of traditional specialized tutoring. * Students are encouraged to repeat activities multiple times in short bursts which significantly impacts skill development, retention and generalization. * Facilitates faster skill development. HOW DOES EAGLE’S FOUNDATIONAL READING PROGRAM WORK? We conduct an initial targeted assessment with each child virtually via Zoom to determine current performance levels and needs. We then design a targeted learning plan which incorporates our brief instructional videos and professionally designed instructional practice materials within an app-like format kids love delivered through the Boom Learning platform, available on computer or tablet. DO YOU MEET INDIVIDUALLY WITH STUDENTS? For our Foundational Reading Program we do meet individually with students virtually through Zoom for a targeted assessment. The assessment for most students will take between 20-45 minutes to pinpoint current performance levels and needs. The results of the assessment will be shared with the parent/guardian within several days of the administration in the Learning Management System. A specific targeted learning plan, initial assigned brief instructional videos and interactive online learning activities will be included. Students can then begin instruction. MY CHILD HAS BEEN EVALUATED FOR SPEDCIAL EDUCATION SERVICES AND HAS AN IEP, BUT IS STILL STRUGGLING WITH READING – CAN YOU HELP? We absolutely can help! The targeted reading instructional activities in our Foundational Reading Program incorporate a multisensory structured approach. Students learn to encode and mark words so they are able to grasp the patterns of the English language. The markings utilize an Orton-Gillingham based approach to help students learn to break the code of the English Language. Each skill is explicitly taught to mastery by using scaffolded targets with appropriate repetition to build success. WHAT ARE HIGH FREQUENCY DOLCH WORDS? The Dolch Words are lists of words that frquently occur in children’s literature. They are divided into 5 groups according to grade level from Pre-Primer to Grade 3. Sometimes Dolch Words are referred to as sight words as they are words that should be recognized quickly on sight by the reader. Our Dolch Word Series allows for independent practice, introducing 2 words at a time in random rotation on the cards. The words are presented in a field of 4 same-level Dolch Words, giving continuous exposure to all of the words in the list. The student may click the seal to hear the word repeated as needed then chooses the word they hear. The Boom Card format allows for errorless learning by removing an incorrect answer guiding success on subsequent tries. Available for Pre-Primer, Primer, First, Second and Third Grade. Lessons are assigned in a sequential order, starting at the level specified at time of purchase, to build skills from the ground up. If words in that level are mastered during the month - the words of the next level will be introduced. WHAT MARKING SYSTEM DO YOU UTILIZE FOR YOUR FOUNDATIONAL READING PROGRAM AND WILL MY CHILD BE CONFUSED IF IT IS DIFFERENT THAN WHAT IS USED AT THEIR SCHOOL? Great question! We do use many markings that are universal to many of the Orton-Gillingham based systems such as a breve for short vowels, a macron for long vowels, a line through silent e at the end of the word, etc. along with other specific markings. The markings we utilize with explicit instruction teach a student to pay attention to the critical elements of English that help in encoding and decoding (spelling and reading) words. If the marking system is a little different than that used in his/her current school, there is not an issue as the exposure to different markings will only reinforce and focus attention to the critical pattern being taught. MY CHILD HAS BEEN ASSESSED AT SCHOOL AND IS NOT ON TRACK TO BE PROFICIENT IN READING BY GRADE 3 – CAN YOU HELP? We absolutely can help! With appropriate instruction 95-98% of all students can learn to read. Many students who are struggling with learning to read have not been explicitly taught the rules for decoding words in a systematic fashion. Likewise, many have not been provided with adequate structured practice opportunities. HOW DO YOU ADDRESS COMPREHENSION? Our Foundational Reading Program specifically develops decoding skills while incorporating comprehension through language use within sentences. Although this program will help students build comprehension skills, it is not specifically targeted at teaching comprehension. I NEED TO BRUSH UP ON MONEY SKILLS TO GET MY FIRST JOB – CAN YOU HELP? Yes! Our Money Skills Acquisition Curriculum is a comprehensive program presented in 17 sequential Boom Card Decks. It starts with pennies and bills then each deck builds upon the previous. Upon mastery of all the decks, the student will be proficient in counting money. It uses drag and drop photos of coins and bills in a format appropriate for all age levels. HOW DO I GET STARTED? Please click on the "Purchase" button on our website to be directed to our store and select the EAGLE program in which you want to enroll. Once payment has been received, you will be given log in information for your account and a Google Survey will be sent to you. For our Foundational Reading Program, the Google survey will help us determine what assessment components are necessary to best determine your child's needs. This survey will also allow you to indicate your preferred selection(s) for scheduling administration of the virtual assessment. The assessment results along with the learning plan will be shared within several days - and your child can start instruction. For the Dolch Word Series , the Google survey gathers general information needed to start the series – there is not an assessment component. You will be given a list of Dolch Words for each level to help you determine where you want your child to begin. If they master all the words in the given level during the month, they will be provided with words from the next level series. For our Money Skills Assessment Curriculum, the Google survey gathers general information needed to start the curriculum. There is not an assessment component. Instruction begins with the first level and progresses in order through the 17 levels. Each level builds upon the skills from the one before. HOW IS MY PRIVACY PROTECTED?
